This painting was one of those selected by Jack Beddington for his book Young Artists of Promise. It was painted whist Harris was still a student at Reading University. Gas lamps still dominated the streets of Reading although the "new" fluorescent lamps were being installed on the main roads. Harris was fascinated by the colour juxtapositions.
